Rachel Toro was born in New York City and spent her early years in the Bronx and West Islip, NY, before moving to Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. She attended Colegio San Antonio Abad in Humacao. She came to Miami in 1986, and completed high school at Miami Southridge Senior High. Ms. Toro has worked with children since the age of 17, starting as an Afterschool Counselor for the YMCA and continuing at REM Learning Center where was introduced to Montessori. She attended Montessori Teacher Training Institute (MTTI) in 1994, and expanded her training as an intern and assistant at Alexander Montessori from 1995-1998. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Ana Gomez, Ms. Toro furthered her skills in the preK-K classroom. She previously has worked with Mrs. Roldan in the 4th-6th grade classroom as an assistant and for the past two years was a co-teacher in Rm. 112 with Mrs. Volker. This year she will be teaching in Rm 116 with Ms. Williams. Ms. Toro has a degree in ESE (Exceptional Student Education),and is currently finishing the 9-12 Upper Elemantary Certification from CMTE.
Ms. Toro seems to be destined to be a Montessori educator, as many events serendipitously pointed to this path. When she discovered Montessori, it was true love; in her own words, “It spoke to me and addressed the needs of both my children. They have benefited immensely from the Montessori experience.” Her eldest graduated from CRMA and is now a high school student. Her youngest is a 8th grader in the Middle School classroom. She is bilingual and an avid reader and knows how to crochet. Shhhh…don’t tell anyone, Ms. Toro is addicted to Scrabble!
